What does “Guest Blogging” mean?
“Guest posting” refers to writing and
publishing an article on someone else’s website or blog. It’s a great way to
connect with new readers and get name out.
There are three reasons why guest
posting is such a key strategy for every guest blogger to build their online influence:
1. Guest posting builds relationships with other bloggers :
Bloggers need good content. By being a good guest poster and
adding value to someone else’s blog, you’re going to build relationships with
other bloggers. By making friends with other bloggers through guest posting,
you’re going to grow your influence in the realm of social media.
2. Guest posting is great for search engines :
The
one non-negotiable you should have for guest-posting is including backlink. Over
time, these backlinks will raise the value of your blog to search engines,
making your content easier to find via Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others
3. Guest posting introduces you to new communities :
Perhaps, the best part of guest posting is that it allows
you to enter an already-established community, and share your message. It
allows you to connect with new people, which can ultimately benefit you, if you
do it right.
History of Guest Blogging
Back in the day, guest blogging used to be a respectable
thing, much like getting a coveted, respected author to write the introduction
of your book. It's for this reason, it was a strategy that many websites
employed, not necessarily as a link building strategy but rather so they didn't
always have to always produce their own high quality content, as well as
introducing their readers to writers or topics that they thought their readers
would enjoy.
The Decline of Quality & the Rise of Spam
The quality has definitely declined over the past few years. Guest blogging has caused a low quality content disguised as a guest blog. The authors are simply disguising paid links in the context of a guest blog post – and usually the content is poorly written for very low cost, or is simply stolen from other websites. guest blogging is done; it's just gotten too spam guest posting. In general I wouldn't recommend accepting a guest blog post unless you are willing to vouch for someone personally or know them well. Likewise, I wouldn't recommend relying on guest posting, guest blogging sites, or guest blogging SEO as a link building strategy.Is Guest Blogging dead as Matt Cutts says?
If you’re using guest blogging as a way to gain links in 2014, you should probably stop. Why? Because over time it’s become a more and more spammy practice. Guest blogging may be on Google's radar, but I wouldn't say it’s gone forever.. Here’s why.There is no technical difference between “guest blogging” and any other kind of content.
Google can’t algorithmically differentiate which are guest blogs and which are other kinds of articles. Blogs and websites aren’t legally bound to disclose that anything they publish is a guest post or not a guest post, and in some cases it’s just a matter of perspective.Still, if you’re worried that Google is going to crack down on guest blogging, there are a few things you can follow.
As a publisher:
- Only publish good guest posts. If it’s not spammy, it’s not spam.
- Don’t label them as guest posts. You can include an author bio without spelling out “This is a guest post.” And if the content is valuable to your readers, it shouldn’t really matter where it came from.
- Don’t guest-blog for guest blogging farms. If a site has a “they’ll publish anything” reputation, stay away.
- Build relationships, not links. Get a gig as a regular contributing author or columnist at a good website that has a relevant audience. Build a readership there that’s more valuable than a one-off guest post.
UPDATE: Cutts Says Don't Guest Blog "for SEO"
Matt Cutts' updated his post in response to the response. Here's part of what he added:It seems like most people are getting the spirit of what I was trying to say, but I’ll add a bit more context. I’m not trying to throw the baby out with the bath water. There are still many good reasons to do some guest blogging (exposure, branding, increased reach, community, etc.). Those reasons existed way before Google and they’ll continue into the future. And there are absolutely some fantastic, high-quality guest bloggers out there. I changed the title of this post to make it more clear that I’m talking about guest blogging for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes.
Criticizing the quote of Cutts, I have come to a conclusion that we need to be aware of spam guest blogging.
